The municipality of Praiano with around 2,000 inhabitants is situated on a mountain slope with a view over the Amalfi coast. It belongs to the mountain commune Comunità Montana Penisola Amalfitana in the Italian province of Salerno in the Campania region.
This quiet little place has a rich and long history. Earlier cultures were settled there, as various ruins still show us today. These ruins are old remains of towers and castles that were once strategic points in the city, and some of them are available for visiting.
In the past, the inhabitants of the Amalfi Coast always had to be on their guard against pirates. Therefore, massive watchtowers were built all over the coast. There are also two old watchtowers in Praiano, namely the “Torre di Grado” and the “Torre a Mare”. One of the oldest buildings in the city is the Church of San Luca Evangelista, which was consecrated in 1123. The three-aisled church was redesigned in the Baroque style in 1772. The church is decorated inside with valuable paintings by the artist Giovanni Bernardo Lama from the 16th century. A small museum has been set up in the rectory of the church. The Church of San Gennaro in Praiano is also worth seeing. Its dome is decorated with valuable majolica ceramics!
Praiano has lovely narrow streets and stairs that lead down to the natural harbor and a small beach. This harbor used to be the main square, which was lost in a landslide. Nearby the harbor, there are many cafes where you can sit and relax with a good coffee or glass of wine. You can look at the sea in peace and enjoy your vacation.
From the port of Praiano, there are boat trips to two impressive stalactite caves, the “Grotta di Suppraiano” and the “Grotta dell ‘Africana”. The “Grotta dell ‘Africana” attracts young people who like to party because there is a nightclub in this cave! The beaches of Praiano are quite small, but they are all the more idyllic in secluded bays. Some of them can only be reached by boat. The hotels in Praiano have an excellent reputation and, like the holiday apartments and holiday homes, are very well attended in the high season.
From Praiano along the coast to the east, you can go to Amalfi. This beautiful city must be visited if you have some free time. The hillside location in a bay alone looks like a dream. And the sea view is just as beautiful. On the west, there is another trendy city on the Amalfi Coast that you should visit. Its name is Positano, and it is the most visited town in the whole area. Go there and check out why so many people are coming to Positano every year.
